The Spurling Family
My great grandfather Stephen Spurling II and his son Stephen Spurling III were renowned Tasmanian photographers, each contributing to the rich visual narrative of Tasmania's landscapes and heritage.
Stephen Spurling II, born in 1847, was a pioneer in early 19th-century photography, capturing the raw beauty of Tasmania during a time of significant change. His evocative black-and-white images not only documented the landscapes but also preserved a glimpse into the daily lives of Tasmanians.
Carrying on his father's legacy, Stephen Spurling III continued the family's dedication to photography. Born in the mid-19th century, he embraced both traditional and modern techniques, evolving with the times. His work not only paid homage to the classic Tasmanian scenes but also delved into contemporary subjects, reflecting the evolving character of the island.
Together, the Spurlings' photographic journey serves as a visual time capsule, narrating Tasmania's transformation while capturing the enduring spirit of its people and landscapes. Their collective body of work stands as a testament to the artistry and storytelling inherent in the lens of Tasmanian photography.
